Wellness & Vaccinations

Ever hear the expression, “Prevention is the best medicine”? Of course you have! Did you know that this concept could easily be applied to the care of our animal family members? If you want your pet to enjoy as many happy, healthy years as possible – and we know you do – you must focus on wellness care and preventative medicine. It’s that simple.

Why is wellness care so important?

Because companion animals age at a much faster rate than humans, receiving regular checkups is critical to keeping them happy and healthy for as many years as possible. This accelerated life span means that changes in your pet’s health can happen rapidly. That’s why scheduling a checkup at least once a year is so important. That way we can both monitor your pet’s current health and manage that health over time, taking preventative measures and detecting illness in its earliest stages.

Simply put, the more we stay on top of your companion’s health, the better the chances of a long, fulfilling life. That’s a goal we can all agree on!

What is wellness care?

Similar to visiting your own doctor once a year for a checkup, wellness visits include annual physical exams to check your pet’s health. During a wellness exam, your pet’s vital signs will be measured, including temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate. The doctor will then conduct a thorough “nose to tail” examination, checking your pet’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth and skin, measuring body weight and listening to the heart and lungs. We may also recommend certain routine diagnostic tests as well to further evaluate your pet’s current condition.

These exams provide us with a clear and accurate snapshot of your pet’s health each time he or she visits. This allows us to establish a guideline of what is considered “normal” for your companion, which we can then use to measure and monitor any changes as they occur over time. The shorter lifespan of a pet means that diseases can progress at a much faster rate. The ability to identify potential problems before they have a chance to develop can add years to your loved one’s life, and vastly improve the quality of that extra time you get to share with them.

Wellness care also involves a number of preventative measures, which we can use to help protect your pet from many of the risks and dangers he or she will encounter over the years. We will develop a customized vaccination plan as well as a parasite prevention strategy, both of which will be tailored specifically to your pet’s needs, lifestyle and risk factors. Managing your pet’s nutrition and weight is also an important part of wellness care.
