Do you know who you will turn to in the event that your pet requires emergency veterinary care?

It’s not something that any pet parent ever wants to think about, but it’s something every one of us must be prepared for. After all, accidents and sudden illnesses occur, and they rarely strike when we’re expecting them to. That’s why it’s good to know that you can count on the team at Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital.

Our state of the art facility is well-equipped to handle any emergency medical, diagnostic or surgical need that may arise for your pet, with our team standing by to step in and assist at a moment’s notice. We’re experienced and well prepared to handle even the most critical of situations with swiftness and efficiency to improve the chances of a positive outcome for your pet.

Some of the signs that your pet may be experiencing an emergency include, but are not limited to:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Choking

  • Ingestion of a toxic substance or foreign object

  • Persistent vomiting

  • Diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours

  • Broken bones

  • Puncture wounds or lacerations

  • Trauma, such as a fall or being hit by a car

  • Difficulty urinating

  • Disorientation

  • Swollen abdomen

  • Sudden lameness

  • Extreme lethargy

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Seizures or convulsions

If your pet experiences any of these things, immediate medical attention is required. We always advise that you call ahead whenever possible, as this allows us to assess the situation, provide first aid instructions and prepare the hospital for your pet’s arrival. Of course, if the situation doesn’t allow time for you to phone ahead, please do not hesitate to come directly in for immediate care. Remember – in an emergency, every second counts.

Critical care services are available with our staff during our regular office hours. After-hours emergencies will be referred to a local 24/7 urgent care facility.
